Thinking about going into medical transcriptionist work? Then you need to have the right stuff. Having what you need not only includes a quality education from an accredited school, but also the best transcription gear. When you have everything you need, you will be ready to make a living and everything you have assembled will literally be a money-making medical transcription machine!

A professional transcriber needs more than just a computer. If you haven't heard, you can work from home as well as in a medical office. It doesn't take a genius to know that most people choose to go into transcriptionist work from home. Fortunately, everything you need for your career can easily be found at your local office supply store. The first and most important piece of equipment to have in your office is a computer.

However, not just any computer will suffice. You need a trustworthy computer that comes with anti-virus software, anti-spyware, and plenty of disk space. The last thing you want is to have your computer crash or break down unexpectedly. What would happen? Unless you have another reliable computer nearby where you can sit and work, you miss out. Missing too much work will cost you money no matter what type of career you have. Better to be safe than sorry.

You'll also need a comfortable desk and chair where you can spend hours each day typing medical reports. The more comfortable the desk and chair, the fewer headaches and muscle cramps you will have to deal with, which is a very common problem for people who work at a desk all day. Also, make sure that you set up your home office in an area where there are minimal distractions.

A few of the other things you will need to complete your medical transcription machine include a foot pedal and a shorthand program. A foot pedal is needed to rewind, play, stop, and fast forward the dictation. It's much faster to use a foot pedal because it takes less time than using your mouse to click the commands. If you do try to use your mouse and not a foot pedal when in transcriptionist work, you'll find out quickly that it is very time-consuming.

A shorthand program is necessary to decrease the amount of words you have to type out. Having this type of program installed on your computer can save you thousands of keystrokes per day, allowing your production pace to pick up drastically. You may end up typing 100 to 200 more lines per hour, and that can make a huge difference in your pay.

Another piece of equipment you cannot forget to add to your transcription machine is a quality set of headphones. Be sure that the type of headphones you buy do not hurt your eardrums because you are going to need those. Remember that you are looking for quality, so the least expensive pair of headphones may not necessarily be the best idea.

You can find everything you need and then some online and at local stores such as Wal-Mart and Office Depot. It is important to stay updated and talk to people who are in the same career field so you can stay knowledgeable about the latest equipment. Surf the boards that talk about transcription and read the posts because you don't want to miss out. People who are in transcriptionist work constantly post new tips and advice in transcription web forums all over the internet.

The good news is that it is easy to assemble your money-making transcription machine. Once you've got it all set up, you'll ultimately be in the right mindset to start earning a living doing what you love.
