FASHION is an art reflecting life. Every now and again we hear the names of Christian Lacroix, Paco Rabanne, Dungaree Paul Gautier, Giorgio Armani etc. There fashion designers influence our hair styles, how we dress up, the way we put on makeup and even our habits. Every season fashion gurus determine our choices of clothing.
There are several very important events in the fashion calendar which are called fashion weeks. Fashion weeks are organized each season for fashion houses to show their latest collections in runway shows and for fashion to view the latest trends. The most significant thing is that they present the industry what is in and what is out for the season. The most impressive fashion weeks are held in the fashion capitals, such as Milan, London, New York and Paris where luxury clothes (also known as haute couture) are shown.
Haute Couture is a French term for expensive and fashionable clothes designed for ladies. Couture means dressmaking, sewing, or needlework and haute means refined. Haute couture items are made for a particular customer from high-quality, expensive fabrics and sewn by hand often deploying time-consuming techniques. This is why, couture garments are luxurious and chic.
Depending on the haute couturier and the garment, the cost of a couture item ranges from $10, 000 for a blouse to $40, 000 and usually beyond that sum. The cost is so high due to service, work, exclusivity and first-class materials of the highest quality.
Moreover, every customer will get a garment to fit them well. It takes approximately 100-150 hours to produce a handmade couture suit and up to 1000 hours for an adorned evening dress with thousands of beads sewed by hand. A haute couture house like Chanel, for example, will have about 150 regular clients buying luxury clothes, and a couture house like Dior will make about 20 couture wedding dresses per year.
Along with clothes, well-known couture houses make luxury accessories, including hats, buttons, belts, jewelry, shoes, handbags. Those who can afford couture clothes are glad to pay for exclusivity and the privacy guaranteed by the system.
