Plan the medical billing business. Make a business plan. Firstly decide on the form of business - a sole proprietorship, partnership, or a corporation. Do all the needed formalities. This includes completing your business registration requirements, and other permits and licenses. Also select a name for your business.
Settle on the investment limit. The start up cost will vary according to how you set it up initially. That is whether you go first class with brand new equipment and supplies, or do it gradually as on when little money starts coming to your kitty. Then too you will require $3,000 to $5,000 to start the business. The basics will include computers, fax, modem and internet connection, back-up systems, office supplies. Insurance forms, coding and other reference books, medical billing software and office furnishings
The medical billing software is one of biggest expense at the start up stage. It usually starts at $500. Thoroughly research various software before you settle on one. Always ask for a demo. And buy software that will gradually be updated as your business grows. Steer clear of them that have capacity to handle only one physician or tax I.D. numbers. Also check the quality of the after-sales support of your software provider.
Market your business. Now comes the major phase that is generating clients for your business. Well it is not easy. The majority of your time at the initial phase will go in gathering clients.
Build a mailing list of doctors in your area, later you can expand it. You can build it in-house if you are employing a data team or you can buy it from a list vendor. Send emails with a brochure detailing the services that you offer. Immediately follow up your mailings with calls.
Put up a website. Optimize it so that your prospects can see you in need. You can take help of blogs to market your business. You can also do cold call. This is a little difficult in your case as doctors have a tight schedule. Anyhow, you can leave your business card and marketing materials with the receptionists.
Another method of growing your business is referrals. Check out the doctors that you and your family use. Introduce your business to them. Ask for referrals to other doctors they know who may need your services. But don’t depend on it too much as asking for referrals can make your clients suspicious of your motives or doubtful of the quality of your service. Many may think it is obligatory on your part and may not help you. Use this means tactfully and try other ways as well.
Cater additional services. Beside offering medical billing service you can offer additional services like electronic fund transfer "EFT", third-party collection service, remote backup service "RBS", and digital scanning of medical records. Doctor’s will need you and your services more and more.
If you are planning to start a medical billing business, it is the ripe time to do so.
