Corrosion resistance in industrial and petro-chemical pipes

Pipes and pipe fittings, including flanges, are usually made from one of the higher grades of stainless steel when applied to heavy industrial applications or the transportation of hazardous substances.
Higher stainless steel grades are not only extremely durable but also highly corrosion-resistant. Within the industrial and petro-chemical sectors, the potential for corrosion is a serious issue. Corrosion can take several forms.
Crevice corrosion, for example, causes a steel pipe to weaken at vulnerable points where any seams might exist. Pitting corrosion on the other hand is an extremely hard-to-identify type of corrosion that affects extremely small areas along the pipeline. Welding, the existence of bacteria, chemicals and heat can also lead to corrosion.
If the pipes are being used to transport dangerous substances, either across large areas or within a local industrial plant, corrosion poses a serious public health threat; chemical leaks, gas explosions and fires are among the dangers posed when pipes become damaged in any way.
At ChemiPetro we have a range of highly effective steel alloy pipe fittings and flanges including those made from the following materials: ‘6 % Moly’ superaustenitic stainless steel: this is highly resistant to corrosion, consisting as it does of a combination of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen. This stainless steel alloy is particularly effective in resisting corrosion from chloride-based substances such as salt water, as well as a wide range of chemicals.
Duplex stainless steel: essentially a combination of two different crystalline forms of basic steel, namely ferrite and austenite, this material is highly effective in handling chemicals and the pressures of heat, as well as salt water. Owing to its lower alloy content, duplex has the advantage of being less expensive than 6 % Moly.
Super duplex stainless steel: this offers even greater corrosion resistance than duplex owing to the addition of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen.
