According to a 2001 census, around 78 per cent of the total population residing in Wales was in fact based in the area of South Wales.

South Wales is covered heavily in some parts by the Brecon Beacons, and has always been noted and applauded for its natural beauty, from its valleys and its forests to its mountains and its river valleys. These great works of Mother Nature were pointed out and celebrated by romantic poets such as William Wordsworth amongst others.

The skyline of South Wales, as everywhere in the world changed dramatically however during the Industrial Revolution, especially because Wales was a fantastic resource for coal and iron, and in the early years of the revolution, both the Glamorgan and the Monmouthshire Valley areas were heavily exploited for both of these resources.

Coming up to around the 1830s, or around that period, the Welsh coal and iron industry was booming, with an excess of hundreds of tons being transported by barge to ports in Cardiff and Newport to name but two. A little while later, in the 1870s, the coal was now being moved around by the many railway networks to Newport Docks, which were, at the time the largest coal exporting docks to be found right across the world.

In the 1880s, coal was being exported from Barry into the Vale of Glamorgan, and the Marques of Bute built a railway system that stretched from Cardiff into the Welsh Valleys where the majority of the coal was being found and mined, he did this on his own land as at the time he owned much of the land to the north of Cardiff, but it wasn’t without good reason as he then charged taxes per ton of coal that was transported out using his own railways, and considering the volume of coal that was being transported at this point in time, it was an extremely lucrative position to be in as you can well imagine.
