If you’re interested in learning a bit more of what Cardiff has to offer and the things that the Welsh are traditionally famous for, you have come to the right place.
Cardiff is a hub of eclectic culture, with something to suit everyone’s tastes; there is Cardiff Castle and Castle Coch, if its history that gets you hot under the collar, or the more contemporary Wales Millennium Centre and Cardiff Bay. This has not gone unrecognized, and Cardiff was in fact a finalist in the European Capital of Culture in 2008. It’s also a favorite tourist destination with some of its accolades including being voted the eighth favorite UK City by readers of the Guardian, ranking in the top ten of destinations in the UK to visit by Visit Britain, which is the official British tourist boards website. Its not only recognised within the United Kingdom however, with US travel guide Frommers, listing the city of Cardiff as one of 13 top destinations worldwide for 2008.
Music is integral to Wales, and apart from rugby it’s a popular connotation that springs to mind when Wales is mentioned. Numerous concerts are held in Cardiff, in different venues around the city like Cardiff International Arena (CIA), St David’s Hall and the Millennium Stadium.
Festivals are also a big part of the Cardiff charm, with Cardiff’s Big Weekend festival claiming to be Great Britain’s largest free outdoor festival, with numbers in 2007 in excess of quarter of a million. The National Eisteddfod is sporadically hosted in Cardiff, which is a celebration of welsh culture and arts. The country is traditionally referred to as "the land of song".
Music in Wales is often connected with Male Voice Choirs, such as the Morriston Orpheus Choir and Treorchy Male Voice Choir that enjoy a worldwide reputation. This tradition of choral singing has been expressed through sporting events, especially in the country's national sport of rugby, which in 1905 saw the first singing of a national anthem, Wales' Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, at the start of an international sporting encounter.
