All children are attracted to music and most of them will try at some time or another to play a musical instrument. Popular among those instruments the world over is of course the guitar. Many children however give up playing the guitar before they have ever really begun because they get very sore guitar fingers. This is a problem experienced by beginners of all ages as their fingers get used to pressing the guitar strings along the fret board. Until their fingers toughen up most people, but particularly children with soft hands, find that learning to play the guitar can hurt. That shouldn’t mean giving up though! Those sore guitar fingers will soon heal as they get used to playing. The lifetime of pleasure to be enjoyed from learning to play guitar far outweighs any initial discomfort.
There are certain precautions that can be taken from the start to avoid those painful guitar hands. Fitting light gauge strings to the guitar and ensuring it is properly set up will make a tremendous difference. Try to avoid playing for long periods to begin with. Particularly with children, their great enthusiasm can persuade them to play for far too long in one session. It is far better to play regular short sessions than one long one. It is also a good thing to initially play the guitar quite slowly to avoid overworking the hand muscles and then as skills develop to gradually speed up.
Anyone who does experience painful hands playing guitar could try an old fashioned remedy of soaking their sore guitar fingers in a little vinegar briefly before playing. Another cheap remedy is to dissolve a little alum into warm water and soak the fingers briefly in the mixture each day as this is supposed to toughen up the skin. If the fingers do become sore, then the application of some ice will certainly give a little relief after guitar practice.
The best advice to avoid split and sore guitar fingers or painful guitar hands is just to take it easy. Practice in short sessions; allow any soreness to heal before continuing and keep at it. Gradually the discomfort will disappear.
Sore guitar fingers and aching hands are a normal condition and something that everyone, whatever their age will experience as they start learning to play guitar. As skills develop the length of playing times will naturally increase as will the speed at which they are played.
Learning to play guitar isn’t easy to start with. It does take an amount of dedication and perseverance. However, if someone loves music and has a determination to play the guitar then a little discomfort with those sore guitar fingers is surely going to be a price worth paying. As time goes by and playing the guitar becomes even more of a passion those painful guitar hands and sore guitar fingers will all be forgotten. Stand back and watch as that child becomes not only a skilled musician but above it all, becomes a happy guitar player!
