It goes without saying that tax investigations are bad news. They can involve very large sums owing to H M Revenue and Customs but the direct financial implications are not the only bad news when the taxman comes knocking at your door.
Generally speaking, everyone wants to help the taxman do his job. If a business is asked for information, it will go to great expense and spend a long time ensuring the information is correct before presenting it to the tax inspector. However, tax inspectors often ask for unnecessary information. They will produce a shopping list of questions regardless of their relevance to a particular business. They do not concern themselves with how difficult it may be to extract certain information. They may not even look, in any depth, at the information when they receive it. This is why it is important to use tax experts who understand what it is the inspector is trying to do and can dissuade him from questions arising from ignorance or inexperience.
The Revenue’s starting point in many investigations is a company’s payroll services department. If they find anything wrong, however minor, they will feel they have licence to expand their investigation into all areas of the business and the personal financial affairs of the directors.
This is yet another reason that payroll services departments need to make sure everything is correct and it is not surprising therefore that many businesses are finding it makes sense to use a payroll bureau to operate their payroll. This can result in not only more accurate payroll but also reduce overheads. It is not realistic for many businesses to employ staff of a high enough calibre directly.
We at Dataplan are a specialist payroll company and are able to ensure your payroll is operated with the minimum of fuss.
